ASTITVA: A project at Khamir
During the course of this project, we visited some of the copper bell makers in the village of Jura and Nironha in Kutch. In order to depict the life of these artisans, a sound installation was embedded inside a giant copper bell and showcased at Srishti for the visitors of the LENS conference.
To replicate the texture of the Bell on fabric, a rust dyeing technique was used. This technique has been patented by Nuno Fabrics and was undertaken with due permission.
Design for the Real World
These products have been inspired by Victor Papanek's book; "Design for the Real World". The concept behind these products is that "Not everything we throw out is Waste". We need to reconsider what we throw out.
I collected used straws from a juicewalla in Bangalore, disinfected them and wove them using the double cloth technique into a clutch. I also collected broken guitar strings and wove them with cotton to create a lamp.
